The Orca Report

The Orca Report is Sonny's latest film project. After watching the film Blackfish, Sonny was so moved by the whales' plight and so troubled by Dawn Brancheu's horrific death, that he spent hours each day for over two months poring over articles, books, and published papers on the internet, in addition to watching dozens of hours of youtube footage and documentaries regarding killer whales. Blackfish was only the tip of the iceberg. What is going on with these whales and dolphins in captivity really is a crime against a sentient species. Human beings will and one day should be called to account for this crime. Sonny does now consider himself a fervent supporter of these majestic creatures and his contribution to helping these animals will be filming and producing The Orca Report as a way of bringing attention to their plight.

News and Info

LOLITA

The most tragic captivity of all is that of Lolita, having spent almost 40 years imprisoned at the Miami, Seaquarium; most of the years she has spent all by herself. As you can see in the film posted below, she is the one Orca who really needs all our help and support.

The federal government is looking into reclassifying Lolita as an endangered species, which means they would be forced to move her back to L Pod in Puget Sound. Click FormLetterSupportingLolita.docx

OTHER DOCUMENTARIES ON KILLER WHALES - I will be adding more documentaries as I find them.

Sully the Pilot Whale - In all honesty and fairness, what would have happened to Sully if Seaworld had not stepped in? This is the first time I have ran across a documentary or film that showed a different side of it in a way that does make you stop and think, and that is why I am posting this. And go Sully, may you live a long and happy life.

Whale Life -
Another super informative documentary, this one about humpbacked whales. Man, again I had no idea these creatures could be so fascinating. And am really becoming fascinated by false killer whales as well. And while I do love killer whales, totally passionate about them, I will admit to not being a big fan of the transients who prey on other baby whales. While there is not such attack in this video, I believe there is such an attack in one of the videos below, and it totally breaks my heart when they kill that baby grey whale... and they are so purposeful and deadly in their attack.

Saved by Dolphins -
This is a hell of a story and features interviews with Lori Marino.

The Story of Luna – I really do not want to alienate friends I have yet to make, but in this case it seems even the experts were wrong and in the end, we all failed Luna. This just should have had a better result, a true he lived happy ever after kind of ending… instead of the heartbreaking, drop-to-your-knees-sobbing ending that it did have.

Frontline: A Whale of a Business

When I offered to show someone a reluctant interview, this was it. You will notice Chief Veterinarian Jim McBain  looks like he wants to be anywhere but there and is clearly reluctant and uncomfrotbale during the interview. The embed code is disabled but I urge you to click on link and watch on you tube.

The Powerful and Intelligent Killer Whales (Hi-Def Documentary)

A really cool and interesting doc on Orcas.

National Geographic: The Whale That Ate Jaws

You have to see this to believe it.

The Free Willy Story: Keiko's Journey Home

The real story of Free Willy.

[BBC Natural World] The Woman Who Swims With Killer Whales

This is a chance for you all to check out New Zealand’s Dr. Ingrid Visser. A sweetheart of a lady doing some of the most amazing  work in the world with the killer whales in New Zealand. Thanks to her efforts, Orcas were re-classified from just vulnerable to critically endangered in New Zealand. Dr. Ingrid Visser is one of the true heroes in the killer whale community.

We will be updating and adding videos to this as we come across them.
